Five people, including three youths, were wounded while standing at a spaza shop during a suspected gang-related shooting in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain. The boys aged 12, 13 and 14 and two adult males were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
Police say they had responded to the shooting on Wednesday and found two men and three minors who had sustained bullet wounds to their bodies.
“The motive is believed to be gang related and no arrests has been made as yet.
"All the victims were treated on the scene by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
‘‘It is believed that the victims were standing at a spaza shop when unidentified suspect (s) fired several shots.
‘‘An attempted murder case has been opened for investigation,” said police spokesperson FC van Wyk.
Meanwhile, police made a breakthrough in the murder of 9-year-old Grade 3 pupil Aqeel Davids who was shot dead in Ocean View earlier this month.
The two suspects will appear in Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court today.
However, the boy’s family said it had learnt of the arrests on social media.
“I am not ready to speak to anyone about this because it is too sensitive,” said Aqeel’s aunt Fatima Petersen.
The area was on lockdown last week as disgruntled residents took to the streets to protest against ongoing crime in the area.
On Friday, residents burnt tyres and other debris on the main road and threw stones at the police.
“Following the murder of a nine-year-old boy in Ocean View on Saturday, September 9, provincial detectives have been working around the clock, following up on leads and arrested two suspects in Manenberg on Wednesday," Van Wyk said.
Three other people between the ages of 19 and 28 were shot and wounded in the attack, say police, and is believed to be gang related. Two of them were Aqeel’s relatives.
The shooting happened when alleged gang members chased a man who had run into the family’s back yard. Aqeel was shot in the head while sitting in his family’s living room.
Van Wyk said Western Cape police remained committed to solving all serious violent crime cases and bringing the perpetrators to book.
The suspects aged 20 and 24 are facing murder and attempted murder charges.
